That said, the lightspeed development of mixed-model LLM’s, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and near-horizon “world models” make possible tools and insights that supercharge the recruitment and talent search process.

The Talent Studios developed Determined People™, a comprehensive AI-powered talent platform for researching, identifying, targeting, and engaging candidates — with video interview assessment capabilities as a feature innovation. As we built a set of tools that touch every stage of the candidate journey, we found ourselves navigating a philosophical battleground that extends far beyond recruitment and talent search when it comes to what role AI will play in our working life. Should technology, progress and innovation be left unencumbered to assist in decisions that affect hearts, souls and livelihoods, or should we have regulations, laws, governing bodies and guardrails in place to make sure that the least harm is done and that some of the most important decisions in professional life aren’t taken out of the hands of humans?
This debate exists on a spectrum: on one end, technology titan Peter Thiel represents the most bullish position—innovation flourishes without regulatory interference, and bad or dangerous products get weeded out through competition and market forces. Aravind Srinivas at Perplexity AI shares this firm anti-regulation stance, arguing that premature constraints will stifle AI’s transformative potential. David Sacks (Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors for Technology) is also particularly bullish, and trusts markets to self-correct, but believes some intervention may be needed when failures or harm are demonstrable. On the other end of the spectrum, Dario Amodei and Jack Clark at Anthropic advocate most strongly for proactive guardrails, while Demis Hassabis (Google DeepMind) and former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever align closely with this position—arguing that when AI systems affect people’s livelihoods at scale, we can’t afford to wait for market discipline to kick in. By then, real people have already paid the price of experimentation. These aren’t abstract debates. They’re the daily tensions we navigate as builders trying to create something both powerful, additive, and responsible that also still takes a second seat to human expertise for decisions in the three-dimensional world.
There has always been an inherent hunger to quantify human factors, and the tidal wave of AI-enabled technology capabilities are offering an enticing “wild west” and new frontier of experimentation with appraising candidate and client fit. The science is revealing challenging realities at the intersection of technology and recruitment, particularly around AI’s use in assessments. Recent research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (June 2025) shows that AI assessment fundamentally changes how people behave —candidates perform for algorithms rather than showing their authentic selves. Meanwhile, The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) guidance on AI-based selection tools reminds us that innovation doesn’t exempt us from basic standards: our tools need to be fair, valid, reliable, and measure what we claim they measure.
Here’s what keeps us up at night as builders: clients want predictive accuracy above all else, but they’re often optimizing for the wrong thing. They want to know “will this person outperform expectations or be dead average?” or “will they be here 24 months from now?” They hope that the findings of our incredibly powerful AI-enabled platform will not only provide a definitive answer but also act as an insurance policy (much like a ghSMART assessment) for boards, investors or leadership teams that want to be able to cover themselves in the event of a hiring disaster. Complete reliance on the objective scores that technology platforms/digital workers/agents provide on matching candidate incumbent company and client company attributes, fit to the role scope, psychological signals, and team dynamics disavows hiring managers from spending the time to deeply unpack hard truths and difficult discussions with existing teams on what it would take for a candidate to succeed, or being honest with themselves and transparent with candidates about what the challenges and opportunities are within the organization, not just selling them. Moreover, it requires them to spend time personally assessing candidates and making the talent search as high of a priority if not higher than the line operation of the business, even if it’s not convenient or doesn’t produce a 12-month ROI.
Our approach with Determined People™ is to draw from the positive attributes of both the under-AI and over-AI philosophies rather than choose a side—and that means being deliberate about where AI adds unprecedented insight and value and where human judgment, lived experience, worldview and understanding of client organizations remains the leading tip of the spear and essential.
AI excels in benchmarking KPIs, targeting and isolating constituent characteristics of client organizations and projecting them into the marketplace to identify and engage appropriate analogous companies and people. It levels the playing field so that junior recruiters, HR leaders and low-frequency hiring clients have the business intelligence, instant knowledge and decision-framework capabilities of seasoned talent search professionals. This is AI doing what it does best—processing vast amounts of market data, recognizing patterns, and surfacing insights that would take humans weeks to compile. At present, AI cannot replicate human recruiter-candidate interactions that create emotional connection, engagement, rapport and understanding that often compels passive candidates (non-job seekers) to reconsider their career trajectory. This is also where human judgment on the recruiter side is most important to access initial fit to the role and an intrinsic and visceral sense of whether or not the candidate’s personality would be a match for a client team. Once this initial bar has been met and the candidate is “in process,” AI and technology become valuable again through video assessment tools – analyzing more nuanced elements of candidates’ fit to role specifications and capturing aspects of psychological characteristics that can serve as normative data points for comparing candidates relative to each other in objective, fair and meaningful ways. These assessments don’t present themselves as ultimate hire/no-hire decisions, but rather as inputs that inform human judgment. For these assessment features, technology grounded in established social-organizational psychology science—measuring traits that have decades of research that shows validity and reliability in predicting job performance are critical. The finalist stage of a search process requires human decision-making and gut instinct as the most critical and ultimate guide. Live case studies focused on actual business conditions, final interviews, and evaluations of real-time team chemistry and dynamics with the client organization are all very human-centered—these are the moments where no current algorithm can replace experienced judgment about whether someone will truly thrive in a specific organizational context.
The AI guardrails that Amodei, Clark, Hassabis, and Sutskever advocate for and the innovation velocity that Thiel champions aren’t opposites—they’re complementary when you build the right platform for the industry and clients that you serve. We’re betting that the future belongs to tools that can articulate not just “this candidate will succeed” but “here’s what we measured, why it matters, how we know it’s fair, and what role it plays as part of a holistic decision. The companies that survive the coming reckoning will be those who treat ethics and validity as product requirements from day one, not compliance afterthoughts. The question we’re wrestling with isn’t whether AI should transform hiring—it already is. It’s whether we build tools that amplify organizational wisdom or just automate biases faster. We’re choosing to build slowly enough to get it right, even when the market is screaming for speed.
